 Fáilte to Junior Infants 2017/18

We have been very busy in September getting to know our teacher and each other. We are settling in so well into the school routine, making lots of new friends and learning a lot too!

We have been delighted to spend some of our Integrated Learning time and some break times in the new outdoor classroom. We are so lucky to have this fantastic resource in our school! Here are just a few photos of some of our activities.

We had great fun in Tearaways on our school Tour. We played in the indoor play area, had a go on the big slide, went on a tour of the pet farm to see all the animals, tried out the go karts and the sledge run, went on a tractor ride and had great fun in the sandpit and in the playground. We had a fun filled and very enjoyable day in beautiful sunshine!

We also got the chance to do an African drumming workshop with Niall from Wassa Wassa drumming. Our teacher was very impressed with our sense of rhythm. Here are some pictures of us making lots of noise!

We have been very busy in Art class this year. We have had lots of opportunities to experiment with clay, paint, fabric and other materials and we are always proud of our creations. Here are some pictures of our lovely artwork.

In Science, this week, we were investigating which items would float on water and which items would sink down to the bottom of the bowl. We had to predict the outcome first and were very excited if we predicted correctly!

We had a very interesting talk this week when the grandmother of one of our class came to talk to us about life and school in the past. We loved hearing her stories and were interested in all of the ways school was different back then. She told us about the games she played with her friends and we are going to try some of them in school.

Last month’s Integrated Learning theme was the Construction site. We took turns being the architect drawing up the plans for the buildings and being the builders working on site. We tried building with lots of different materials, as well as taking part in different activities based around buildings.

We are all enjoying our ZUMBA classes with Fabiene. Here are a few photos of us in action.

We were also lucky enough to try out some Ceili dancing with Mary during Seachtain na Gaeilge. We learned some basic steps and then, we did a big group dance. Bhaineamar an-sult as!

We are learning about weight in Maths. We are enjoy trying to make the buckets balance by making them the same weight. We have also been checking to see which items are heavier or lighter.

We have been learning more about magnetism. We have been having great fun trying out magnetic mazes, great for developing hand-eye coordination and fine-motor skills.

We have been learning about the doctor and have set up a doctor’s surgery in our role play corner. We have been taking turns being the doctor, the nurse, the patient and the receptionist.

We were very lucky when one of our parents came to talk to the class. He is a doctor and told us about all of the instruments the doctor uses and what they are used for. We went on a virtual tour of the doctors surgery and we even got to use some of the doctor’s instruments ourselves.

We were delighted when another one of our parents came to talk to the class. She works as a scientist in a medical laboratory. She told us all about how medicines are made and how we can check to make sure the medicines are safe. We even got to try out some experiments.

Our friends in sixth class came to visit us today. They had made slime as part of a science lesson. They brought the slime to our room and they had planned lots of fun and educational activities for us to do.  We had great fun!

We have been very busy this month getting ready for Christmas. We did a fantastic job with our Christmas play ‘The Sleepy Shepherd’ ! We have been busy doing lots of Christmas art this week. Here are some beautiful Christmas trees we made!

We were very excited to watch a production of Dick Whittington in our school hall today and we were even more excited when one of our classmates got picked to take part!

We have been learning all about patterns in Maths. Here are some of the patterns we made.

We have been having great fun working together to complete puzzles. Here are some photos of our completed jigsaws.

We are enjoying learning to count and have been busy playing dice games.

We were lucky enough to intercept a large box before it reached the recycling bin. Here we are working together to turn it into a haunted house for Winnie the Witch. We had great fun using our imaginations and coming up with ideas!

We have been reading the story The Three Billy Goats Gruff and we started talking about the troll who lived under the bridge. We decided to use the construction toys in our classroom to make a bridge for the troll. We showed great teamwork and cooperation as we worked together. Here are some of our bridges.

A lot of our learning takes place during our active learning sessions.

We had two visitors from the ESB who talked to us about all of the positive benefits of electricity and the different ways we use electricity at home and at school. We also learned that electricity can be highly dangerous and Brian gave us some helpful rules to help us stay safe around electricity. They also gave us a high-vis jacket to help us stay safe if we are out for a walk or a cycle. We couldn’t wait to try them on!

We had a very exciting day today as Craughwell native and Galway Senior hurling star Tomas Monaghan came to visit our school. He brought all the silverware with him and we were all delighted to get to touch the Liam McCarthy cup!

In Maths, we have been busy learning how to sort sets in different ways. We have learned how to sort by colour, by size and by shape. Can you work out what attributes these clever children were using to sort?

In Junior Infants, a lot of our learning takes place through play. Here are a few photographs of us engaged in various activities during our first weeks in school.

We are getting more familiar with the new school environment and we went on a tour of the school to see the classrooms, the hall, the staffroom, the playgrounds, the AstroTurf  pitch etc. We got to meet some of the teachers and the school staff. We were very excited to meet our new principal Mr. Mitchell and we were lucky enough to visit his office.

We had great fun during our Skipping workshop with Mark.  Here are a few photos of us in action.
