Massive congratulations to the girls senior Chess team who successfully competed in the 2018 All-Ireland Chess finals in Dublin last week. Following a nail biting final match the girls, Aoibhe Farragher, Grace Lynch, Aleksandra Regiec and Andrea Slamas were crowned Champions. This followed from success in the Galway finals earlier in the year and is a testament to how well the girls have prepared for the competition. Amelia Gilmore played a vital role in getting the team to the All-Ireland finals but couldn’t attend on the day of the finals herself. Congratulations, also, to Ms Parkinson, who has promoted and facilitated chess within the school and has helped the girls on their road to victory. Maith sibh go léir.

Eason Spelling Bee 2018

“Ms. Marrinan and Ms. Lotty organised the Spelling Bee Competition in our school this year.  All fifth class and sixth class students were eligible to enter the competition and round one of the competition took place in our classrooms. We were given the task of spelling 30 spellings (10 easy, 10 medium and 10 hard spellings).

The top twenty children from round one progressed to round two of the competition. This entailed orally spelling a series of easy, medium and hard spellings until we were down to one person to represent our school. I, Rachael O’Callaghan, was the overall winner and was chosen to represent C.N.S. in the next stage of the competition on the 10th April 2018.

The Galway County Spelling Bee was one of the largest competitions this year countrywide. Forty two students took part to be crowned the County Champion. On the 10th of April we arrived to the Salthill Hotel with enough time to go over a few spellings before it started. We were seated in rows and first we had a practice round before it really began and the word I was given to spell was ‘ocean’.  From my seat I could see my Mom and Ms. Marrinan cheering me on from the audience. I spelt seven words correctly in the competition (including incident, heroic). Unfortunately I spelt ‘antimilitary’ incorrectly but I did try my best and I got down to the last ten participants.

The competition which took place was a great success overall. We were delighted to be given a dictionary and an Easons Voucher on the day. The Galway Bee winner was Holly Shaughnessy from Crumlin National School, Ballyglunin, Tuam. Holly’s favourite author is JK Rowling. Holly will now go on to represent the county in the Provincial Final in May and we wish her the very best of luck.”

Rachel O’Callaghan

Science week Table Quiz

Our two table quiz teams represented the school really well at the Galway science quiz that took place in St. Mary’s College Secondary School.
